Jerusalem to ban gay pride parade as offensive

[JURIST] City officials in Jerusalem said Thursday that they will ban the annual gay pride parade planned for the city next week to prevent offending Jerusalem's conservative religious communities. Parade organizers sought an intervention from the Israeli Supreme Court [official website] claiming that the ban ammounted to a violation of freedom of expression. A similar ban put in place recently in Warsaw resulted in violence [JURIST report] earlier this month when protestors threw eggs and placed barricades in front of those who chose to ignore the ban and march anyway. Three previous parades have passed without much incident [2002 Jerusalem Post report] in Jerusalem, the population of which is mostly made up of conservative Orthodox Jews, Muslims, and Christian Palestinians.
